Matlab installation on AMD – processor based platforms

December 11, 2009 3 comments

Did u recently installed MATLAB on your AMD processor basedcomputer and run into some problems? Just follow the following steps to prevent the MATLAB startup crashes.

Step 1

Find out the blas.spec file  in the MATLAB installation current directory. It is located at

(where %MATLAB% is the path to your Matlab installation)

Step 2

Open the blas.spec file in some text editor lke notepad and just add the following two lines into it

AuthenticAMD Family 15 Model 12 atlas_Athlon.dll # Athlon 64 (Newcastle)
AuthenticAMD Family 15 Model * atlas_Athlon.dll # AMD64

Step 3
You are done. Now begin programming in MATLAB.

Detail analysis on the problem
The problem stems from your CPU being unrecognized by MATLAB's configuration file. All CPUs have some identifier string and MATLAB uses this to identify the DLL file to be used. When an unidentified CPU identifier string is encountered, it apparently defaults to using a PENTIUM DLL and this results in MATLAB system crash when it runs on an AMD-64 based system. This problem will encounter only on MATLAB 7 or lower versions.

Public DNS from google

December 3, 2009 Leave a comment

Recently, the Google research team have found that the web can made faster by making some improvements in the DNS resolution. Ofcourse, many of the Internet users don’t know what is DNS? DNS stands for Domain Name Service and it provide a means to address the site (web servers) by a name (the url), instead of the IP address as it is hard for us to remember the IP of each site. In other words, we can tell that DNS is some technique by which the url is converted to the corresponding IP address.

Are we out of topic. We were talking about ‘Public DNS’ by Google. Google public DNS is a public DNS resolver owned by the google itself. As cited in Google’s official blog, the aim is to benefit users worldwide while also helping the tens of thousands of DNS resolvers improve their services, ultimately making the web faster for everyone. They also claim that it  will enhance the security.
